Dietary Protein and Obesity

Lee Jong-Ho
Abstract
Several studies have suggested that high protein diets may be effective for weight loss and prevention of weight regain. Recent findings suggest that these effects of high protein diets are related to increased satiety and energy expenditure, although underlying mechanisms are not well established. Satiating effect of protein may be helpful to control calorie consumption. Also high protein diets may increase loss of body fat and preservation of fat free mass during weight loss period. Positive changes in body composition and weight loss via high protein diets help to improve certain metabolic problems related to obesity. Although increased protein intake may be expected to be beneficial in obesity treatment, it is important to consider the adverse effects of excess protein intake. Therefore, individualized approach is necessary based on the evaluation of one¡¯s usual protein intake and health status of each individual.
